I'm no expert on these things but I'll do my best to provide all the information I can. Dimensions: 18" Depth 23" Height (floor to highest point of dome) 28 Width. The trunk is wooden with metal embossed edgings. There is a lock with two latches which places the manufacture of the chest post 1872. The top of the chest is dome-topped and there is a portrait of a lady on the inside of the lid. There is a removable shelf with a lidded storage compartment. The inside of the main lid and the top of the storage compartment are lined with decorative paper bordering. There is a serial number on the bottom left corner of the design that says "D1564". There is a label on the left side of the chest that states the following: Forwarded by Silas B. S Ogden's Jersey City & New York Express" "Check 341" "M Stewart 140 Kearney Ave" "Offices: 80 Courtland St and 117 John St, N. Y 583 Summit Ave (Five Corners), Jersey City" "Telephone Calls : New York, 604, John Jersey City, No. E" "Residence & Stables: 16 & 18 Cottage St. S Ogden was born in 1848 and died in 1907. There is also a Silas Ogden that is listed as a member of the Confederate army. Whether it is the same person, I'm not sure. The Kearney address appears in a 1918 65th Congressional report detailing compensation claims due to an explosion at the T.

The owner, a Theo S. Brown received 75 dollars compensation. I think its probable the chest was manufactured somewhere between 1872 and 1907, maybe in the 1880s.

If you have any further questions or would like to contribute some knowledge please feel free to contact me. Condition: the trunk has various signs of wear. The finish on the lid is cracking slightly and the leather handles have come off on the sides. (A piece of one of the straps is inside the chest). The trunk is dusty and there is a pattern on the wood in red that is barely visible.

With a good clean I'm sure it could come alive. There is some tearing on the decorative border on the inside of the lid, mainly in the corner sections. The decorative paper on the lid of the storage compartment is in better shape but the lid has some fraying. The trunk once had a key but it is missing. The floor of the trunk has some cracking, I'm not sure if this is the wood itself.
