Construction is solid and intact. Lid hinges operate well, as do the side handles. Wood has sustained small damage throughout the years but does not affect its structure. Box measures approx 43-3/4" x 23-1/4" x 18-3/4" tall exterior and 17" deep interior. Lid is approx 46-3/4" x 24-3/4".Not a lot is known about this wooden trunk but it does have a story to tell. The finger-joint corners and the mortise & tenon lid trim construction tells of normal techniques of the time. The wrought iron hardware, the hand forged hinges and side handles are not uniform and tell of the one-off items made just for this trunk. The lock, although may be missing a key and may not be complete, appears to be original. The exterior has "1799" painted on the front, suggesting the year built. The name "Anro" is also painted on the front, and initials "A - B" are on the sides and rear; suggesting the name of the builder and/or original owner. Inside are remnants of a paper lining, and a paper label on the underside of the lid. This tobacco label, dated mid 19th century by my research, depicts Black Americana possibly pre-Civil War. When I recently acquired this, it was packed with clothing and blankets; it was loosely lined with sheets of newspaper dated 1978.
The box has been cleaned and oiled to protect the exterior wood and to slightly darken the lighter exposed wood. No repairs were made by me, I only replaced one nail in the iron strapping; leaving the naturally produced texture and patina that so many years has provided.
