Painted Blue Chas Joss (Charles Joss). Approx: 24"L x 11.75" W x 11.5 H. Tough to beat this old timer!

At almost 200 years old and possibly older, this one is actually in pretty good shape. The chest may have been made a few to several years before being lined, but how long before would be a guess. The lock and key mechanism still work well and the box is fairly sturdy. There are many old square nails visible and some may be under paint. The chest has blue paint with name and some decorative stenciling in gold tone.

I tried to find some information on Charles Joss (the painted name on chest) but that appears to have been added much later in the trunk's history and I think the paint is mid 20th Century or later. It looks like a natural wood finish under the paint, but we did not try to remove any paint.

There are areas of peeling paint that show the wood. The paint seems to peel easily and I think could be removed if someone chose, but we do not like altering items we acquire. There were a number of Joss family descendants in the Massachusetts & New England area from 1700 to early 1800's, but no way to know if this was owned by them at that time. It is a well fashioned chest for the era.

The lock is a little crude, but has a great look. The domed top looks nice and there is no major damage other than general wear. There is a noticeable mildew odor from inside chest, but it seemed to dissipate (fade) some after we opened it for a bit. Many of the authentic paper lined trunks are like this as you know.
