A full size American made barrel stave top tooled leather covered trunk with metal edge binding and hardware, circa 1871 to about 1882. It has five thick hardwood slats across the top of the trunk horizontally, and two horizontal wood slats on the front, back and each side.

These wood slats are beaded and appear to be ash, which was a commonly used hardwood for trunk slats. The wood body of the trunk is most likely pine and this is covered with tooled cowhide leather and sheet metal. The trunk has a very good quality brass hasp style lock which is complete. This lock was made by Star Lock Works of Philadelphia, patented in 1869 and marked with their Star emblem and the patent date.

The slat ends are metal covered and have cast metal bumper clamps patented in October 1870. There were short leather tie down straps on the front which are broken off and the center leather lid lifter is broken off. There are also two cast iron lid dowels. There are bands of flat sheet iron binding on the outer edges and three extra bands around the trunk body for added strength. There are hand tooled designs on many of the leather sections as typical on this style trunk. The leather is in fair condition but is dry with torn spots and stains in some areas.

The lid is attached with three iron strap style hinges which are in very good condition. The trunk bottom is metal covered, with the original wood slats and is in good strong condition. There are strong iron bumper rollers on each corner of the bottom. The interior has the original white linen lining in fair condition.

The removable wooden tray is missing but the upper lid compartment and a small glove compartment is present in the lid. The fabric lid holders are torn. There is an envelope pocket on the lid compartment which was for storing papers.

There is an original chromolithograph print in the lid which shows a woman and two children at an outdoor market. The leather side handles are broken but can be replaced, using the original metal holders which are still present. The trunk is in overall good, complete (except for handles and the tray) unrestored condition with typical surface wear and other signs of age and use. It is a very good quality trunk which can be restored or refinished, or even used as it is. 34 wide, 28 tall, 21 deep.
