I'm including lots of photos, so please scroll down. This is a wonderful antique pine blanket chest/trunk, c. 42 1/4" long x 20 1/2" deep x 19 high. The lock and hinges are all old hand-wrought iron, and the chest comes with the original key which works well.
You have to jiggle it a bit to bury it deeply into the keyhole, and then twist to the right -- the chest will then open. But if you close the lid, the chest will automatically lock, so it's important to remember not to put the key inside the chest! One of the original wooden skids is missing from the bottom, but I just use a 1/2 board under there and it levels up just fine. The blue paint was applied over the lacquer finish, but I can't say when as it is very old and worn.
NOTE: A helpful eBayer saw this listing and told me this chest came from Scandinavia. She said, "The first word, "ar", is the Scandinavian (Swedish, Norwegian) word for "year. But the writing style of both the letters & numbers are not gothic. It should have reflected Scandinavian gothic script if the date & initials had been actually painted in 1816.It is totally possible that the trunk itself may be c. 1816, but it appears that the date & initials were added much later. Another clue that the writing was probably added in the 1900s is the spelling & use of the word "ar" - instead of being spelled "Aar" (as it was historically spelled before the 1900s), or even using the word "Anno" (Latin, commonly used in the 1800s). I thank her for her information.
I have loved this trunk for many years, but it's time to share. They told me it came from the estate of Fanny Brice in California. Brice was, as you probably know, a singer and actress from years ago; I have no way to verify the provenance though. It's a wonderful old trunk and great for storage. It would work well at the foot of the bed, or used as a coffee table. I have no way to tell how much it weighs, but it's heavy!
