Macy Round Top Steamer Trunk Chest. This is a fantastic shallow round top steamer trunk with Cunard Line (Ocean Liner) labels on the end as shown.
Prominently labeled is CARMANIA, NEW YORK: RMS Carmania was a British ocean liner designed by Leonard Peskett and built by John Brown & Company for the Cunard Line. In World War I, Carmania was converted to an armed merchant cruiser. When launched in 1905, Carmania and her running mate, Caronia, were the largest ships in the Cunard fleet.
Carmania traveled the New York-Liverpool route from 1905 to 1910. In the spring of 1906, she carried H. Wells to North America for the first time.
Cunard Line Hold 2 Not Wanted... I think the missing word is "on the". The name-steamer-sailing lines may have been filled out, but I can't make anything out.
Cunard Line Gothenburg Checked Baggage 14588... Gothenburg, Sweden - a Cunard port of call... Representing info covered by other labels or hard to make out. Marked underneath is the following: MANUFACTURED FOR R. MACY & CO, [star] NEW YORK as shown.
The trunk has a Victorian period style to it and was probably made in the latter quarter of the 1800s. 39-1/2" wide x 23" deep x 29 high overall. The trunk is wooden, with an olive colored canvas covering, and fitted with leather banding with brass colored tacks, metal banding, oak staves, and Victorian period decorative metal reinforcements. The interior is cream colored canvas covered and includes the till as shown. The underneath is covered in metal and has rollers on all four corners that roll left-right. The original latch was broken open long ago (it will need to be replaced if you restore this great trunk), and replaced with a hand-forged padlock hasp as shown. The hasp doubles as a handy handle for opening the lid. The trunk originally had leather handles on the ends which are now missing. The top is very shallowly rounded, so that the trunk can still be used as a coffee table if you desire.
This wear includes scratches, scuffs, chipping to the aged and weathered leather, and tarnish and oxidation to metal finishes. Please see the pictures for details. The labels are somewhat delicate due to age. The interior has a general aged smell to it, normal for trunks of this age. If you want, you can freshen the interior by using Febreze or something similar.
This trunk could be restored, but I feel it is a great artifact just the way it is, equally fantastic for display and for use. In many cases you may not even need to return it.
