WONDERFUL PRIMITIVE HIDEBOUND TRUNK OR DOCUMENT BOX. About 12" x 7" x 6 1/2. Hide bound trunk with much of the original hair remaining on the lid. Original hand forged iron lock and lock plate. Note that there are no hinges or hinge cutouts.
The box was never meant to be hinged, as the lid was joined to the body only by the deer hide, long since separated. By researching some of the items in the newspaper lining, such as Passmore & Sparhawk Auctioneers, Philadelphia Missionary Society, etc. I was able to date the trunk to about 1820.Some wear to the leather binding straps and surfaces, commensurate with age and use.
