If you're looking for an early (1800s) painted trunk for your home, this is it. Pictures don't do the sheer size and build quality of this chest justice. Heavily reinforced corners, thicker wood edges and kick boards. You could probably toss this trunk off a 4 story building and it won't break on impact. It was built to resist prying and theft from roaming bandits on horseback.
Once you get beyond the gorgeous crackled mint green wash paint, have a look inside to reveal very carefully crafted "stepped" drawer inserts. What this means is the 5 hand crafted drawers each sit in their own stepped depth inside the trunk. If you notice the inside edges of the lining, the edges are notched at different widths. This allows each of the 5 drawers to "sit" just under the next, while not touching. All of the wood surfaces, including the drawer inserts are worn softly to the touch. This is the result of over a century of use. Bottom boards are extra wide (rare) planks. Heavy wrought iron handles on each side. You could keep the drawers inside and use for craft storage, house your entire shoe collection or remove the drawers to reveal enough capacity to store 8-10 winter blankets. We attempted to show the scale next to a wine bottle, but trust us, the actual size of this trunk is not realized from our pictures. Please inspect our numerous pictures for excellent condition. All lock hardware is solid original brass.
The trunk does not lock, so it is safe for use around children. Measurements: 35.5"L x 23"W x 20.5H - About 80 lbs. The item "English Strongbox Trunk.
