The top is constructed from 2 wide planks with a nicely detailed edge molding applied to the front. Each end also has the molding, but as can be seen in the photos they are attached in an unusual style with narrow mortise and tenons that allow for expansion across the grain on the top. There is a small compartment on one end. The lid on the compartment is a newer replacement. Around the bottom edge on the front and each end is an applied molding.
Each corner of the trunk has a round turned foot. This red paint of the chest appears to be original, as does the black accents. The back is painted in a yellowish green. The hand wrought strap hinges are themselves pieces of craftsmanship, with heavy forged rivets connecting the back and top near the hing point.
The handles and back-plates appear to be original. As can be seen in the photos there are some splits in the moldings and other wear appropriate for the age of this piece. The lock and keyhole cover have be removed at some point. Age: late 1700's to early 1800's.
Region: Most likely Pennsylvania or New England. Dimensions: 51" Wide, 23" Deep, 24 Tall. East Coast Deliveries usually run more often.
