My Aunt was a true Renaissance Woman who traveled to Taos New Mexico and lived there for a period in the 1920s = in what was known as The Pueblo Art Colony. She made many friendships and acquired jewelry, pottery, baskets, paintings, and furniture = including this trunk. She had given me this Trunk, and Ive had this piece for many years. Its a very unique piece, its beautifully done, and its heavy! Its time I find it a good new home.
Hopefully with someone who can appreciate it for what it is, along with the fabulous artistry of the piece = it really should be in an Authentic Southwest, Taos New Mexico or Pueblo Style/Decorated Home. It also has an Arts & Craft look and feel to it = and could fit-in with the same type of decor. The Designs in Iron and Bronze always received comments that it looked like the mysterious Crop Circles = a True Conversation Piece. This is NOT a new Chest. This was made by a gifted craftsman/artist and is truly a stunning piece in person and absolutely one-of-a-kind.It can also be used as a coffee table just as it is with the Rustic Surface, or used to store Blankets as I think it was originally made to be a Blanket Chest. Dates to the Late 1800s (1890s) - Early 1900s (teens-20s) at the latest = however its possible that its an earlier piece. In my opinion however, based on the History of my Aunt acquiring it I think its Early 1900s. Chest is all Hand-Done and Very Heavy. Hand-Cut Nails, very Old Wood. Hand-Forged Iron Straps on the Bottom and Back-Side of Chest.
Hand-Forged, Curved/Ornate Iron Metalwork on the Top and Front of Chest = The Iron has surface rust as it was placed on a covered Front Porch over the Years during Harvest Season and Halloween for Decorating = Pumpkins, Gourds, etc. Piece has never gotten Wet.The Metal areas Are untouched = there has been no attempt to clean it. There is surface rust to the Ironwork Designs. I Personally like the look. Its new owner can clean or leave as is. Hand Cut/Hand Forged Bronze Medallions: Circular, Square, Diamond and Rectangular Shaped.
Each Bronze Medallion is hand-decorated with stippling designs in the metal and each has a different design in the stippling decoration = see close-up photos, and use the zoom feature. The large Scalloped and Ornate latch on the front of the Chest is also hand-decorated like the medallions. Not Shown, But the Handles on each side of Chest = are made of strong iron, and rectangular/square in shape. Very secure and strong to support the lifting of the Chest. Top Side Edges of The Trunks Lid is edged in Hand-cut Iron Sheetwork.Front of Chest has a Handmade Lock that has a very ornate, long, scalloped hatch to close/lock the Chest. NOTE: Chest did lock/snap shut = but recently wont stay shut.
Photos show the inside box of the lock which is handmade, and photos also of the outside area iron plate of the lock. Chest has its Original Large Hand-Forged Iron Key that is also made in a Circular Shape in Keeping with the overall design. Its not a replacement, and its a working lock and key = not purely decorative.Note, The Chest used to Lock/ It used to work/Lock = however for some reason, I can no longer keep it locked. It sprung something in the lock box, and I dont want to play with it. Im confident it can be fixed. I can try to lock it again with the Key, however my concern is that it will lock and I may not be able to open it again. NOTE: The lock and key is fully functional once fixed = not just ornamental. Chest measures 17 Tall x 31 1/2 Inches Long x 16 1/2 inches Deep. And quite frankly it could possibly weigh more. And if less, will be adjusted accordingly. NOTE: I will also consider local pick-up. However it will have to be signed for upon pick-up, parties identified, etc.
And I wont be responsible for it once it leaves my hands. In Excellent Antique Old Vintage Condition. This was a well made/well-constructed and artistically beautiful piece.
Not only Decorative, but functional. Wood Construction is nice and strong/sturdy.
No splintered, missing or replaced pieces of wood. The Chest was kept inside, and also placed on a large covered porch on and off over the years, prior to my acquiring it about 25 years ago. I used it on my porch during Harvest Season and Halloween, thus the areas made of iron have surface rust.
It was never exposed directly to the elements, and never got wet. Its never gotten worse, and I left it as I liked the look. Im confident it can be removed if one wishes, but I personally would leave it as it is = it has a great look. This Very Unique and Beautiful Trunk/Chest is untouched = Its never been cleaned with anything except for a simple wipe with a soft cloth. Anything else is patina due to age.
This piece has Not been abused. NOTE: Smoke Free Home, No exposure to cleaning materials, simply wiped down.Has an Old Wood smell that can only be sensed when you literally put your nose right to it. Nothing offensive and some folks find it appealing = just figure its worth mentioning. Feel free to reach out. Item will be packed well.
