Its 30 inches wide, 17 inches front to back, and approximately 23.5 inches tall a perfect complement to any rustic decor. This 139-year-old trunk is constructed with five one-inch fluted hardwood staves across the top, and additional staves on the front, back and sides.
It features its original rare wooden handles with cast iron end caps, 101 tin rosettes on the corners and staves, and a polished brass lock plate. In its day, a premium price was charged for these trunks (which were also known as domed steamers, roundtops, barreltops, camelbacks, and monitor tops, depending on the shape of their lids). The wood was steamed and pressed to achieve its oval shape. This trunk, originally from an estate in Augusta, Georgia, has been restored to its original design, including new leather belts on the front, and a replica antique brass lift handle.
A chain was added to hold the lid open and it has a removable floor covering, if the owner desires to use it. The 24-plus hours of restoration included cleaning, hand-sanding, and staining the interior (Spanish Oak) and exterior (Mission Oak). The black tin trim was repaired and repainted, the inside was finished with two coats of satin polycrylic and the outside was hand-rubbed with gloss tung oil. All of the rosettes were cleaned and polished to their original patina. There is no working lock, but the lid opens and closes and fits perfectly.
The bottom has been cleaned and sealed with polyurethane and fitted with plastic floor sliders, so it's suitable for any type of flooring. As with any 130-year-old antique, you can expect some imperfections, dents and dings but overall this is a solid and handsome rare trunk. It shows more beautifully than the photos allow. PLEASE NOTE : The first panel on the lid has a small raised crack (see photos), which could not be repaired, but it does not effect the integrity of the lid. We take great care in the refinishing of our trunks.
The wood is hand-sanded and smoothed with steel wool between finishing coats of Danish oil, tung oil or satin varnish. All of the hardware is carefully cleaned and hand-painted when necessary using detailed art brushes. The bottom is cleaned, sanded, treated with a special rust inhibitor, if necessary, painted with Rustoleum Satin Black enamel, and finished with clear satin polyurethane so its safe to place on carpet or hardwood floors. Each trunk comes with care instructions. It is absolutely stunning - couldn't be happier. What a great item thanks for offering it!! This trunk was meticulously restored and is gorgeous! Looks great in my den.
