This antique wooden leather steamer travel and storage chest trunk is a real life treasure from the days of steamships, vaudeville performers, and wealthy globetrotters of the late 1800s to the turn-of-the 1900s. It had been a luxury travel standard mainly for steamship passengers of that era and has traveled the world during that time.
There are travel stickers of the period still present on and around the surface of the case. This trunk is in beautifully weathered condition and bears an array of gorgeous patina all around. It is very well built, strong, and sturdy, and made to last over lifetimes. This wonderful antique steamer trunk is surely an awesome collector's piece. It is a unique artifact, as well as a utility craft, of pure artistry, culture, history , era, and a social way of life that once wasning back to the golden industrial age of the late 19th century.The trunk has the good look, feel, and smell of a truly vintage piece. It is made of pure wood with wooden inserts on the inside covered entirely in heavy duty vulcanized fiber that works like metal to strengthen the wood. There are two leathers handles, one on each side of the case. Is layered over with multiple long thick strips of genuine pure black leather that is very lean and smooth and covering all around and across the top, bottom, front, back, and both sides of the trunk. It is then beautifully embellished with a wonderful consecutive array of rounded cast iron silver bolt heads stretched out in long equidistant rows along over the top every strip of black leather, giving it, very notably, a very medieval dungeon and torture chamber look and style, a major and enrapturing aspect of what makes this antique steamer trunk so unique and unlike any other. There are lots of very nice ornate hardware. Running all around, particularly an intricate set of oxidized cast iron metal placements.
Reinforced on the edges and corners of the steamer trunk. There are also two metal clasps and the center lock at the front, and the hinges that hold and secure the lid top, all made of cast iron.
The metal locking mechanism in the front center will not lock in place, but the latch still closes nicely. One iron clasp to the right side of the center front lock is missing its bottom half but has the top part. The other clasp on the opposite side is complete and is strong, intact, and locks securely. The hardware works appear lightly rusted in some areas while shiny in others. All cast iron metal corners, clasps, locks, and hinges are strong, firm, and intact.
The trunk also has a very nice floral lining on the inside which has been upholstered six years ago. This antique steamer trunk is overall very nicely weathered with gorgeous patina all around. It is very well built and constructed, and the wood, vulcanized fiber, leather, and cast iron metal and hardware all appear to be in very excellent condition for its age. The physical exterior scratches, scuff marks, and some rust on the surface areas from previous use.Few minor spots and stains may also be visible. There are also scratches at the bottom of the case. The trunk lid cover has all the strong and durable hardware that allows it to open and sit neatly ajar. The lid works perfectly when opening and closing, and the hinges that keep the lid ajar and moving smoothly are firm and intact.
The leather handles on each side of the trunk are both present and complete. They are a bit weathered but still strong and fully intact. The inside floral lining has been fully cleaned and sanitized. The trunk has no major dents, gouges, holes, nor bents.
