Trunk shown in the attached photographs is made of wood using square head nails to hold it together as well as cover it with what appears to be possibly a deer hide. You can still feel a lot of the fur of the animal on the trunk, however in places over time bare spots have worn, and you can touch and feel the leather like animal hide.
One of the most interesting and unique features of this special preserved piece is that it was lined on the inside with two different dated copies of the original New York Newspaper "The Weekly Herald". The dates shown on the two different front pages that are very visible and able to be read inside the trunk are from both August and December from the year 1841! This trunk has been such well preserved and kept indoors, so the paper inside the trunk was not exposed to light, or any other conditions to damage it, so it is very easily able to be read. The last two attached photographs are showing articles from the newspaper inside the trunk. The trunk itself measures a little over 32 inches in length, is 16 and half inches front to back, and is almost 14 inches in height at the highest point as it has the camel back style to it. When inspecting the trunk closely you can see numerous square head nails, however there are also some round head old nails where it looks like over time someone placed new nails in it to help hold and keep the stretched hide in place.
Has a skeleton key type metal lock plate on the front as shown, however is missing the latch. Does have the original two steel handles on each end, both of which appear to have been blacksmith made. Trunk was found in an old family estate in Northern Ohio.
This is really the only history I know about it. With it having a New York based newspaper inside of it I would say it was made up in the Northeastern area of the country. Can you only imagine if this trunk could talk, and the 180 years of stories it could tell. A truly an amazing piece of history that has been well preserved and needs a new home that it can be a part of and shown off and seen by others.
