This is a beautiful piece of American history, a large flattop trunk from the turn of the century, obtained for restoration from an estate sale in Asheville, N. The trunk is constructed of a pine box with hardwood slats across the top, front, sides and back; steel hardware and latches; and a brass-plated lock. It measures 35 inches wide, 20 inches front to back, and 24 inches tall. It was restored with new brown leather handles and handle brackets; a silver lid stay to hold it open; and a replica Victorian lithograph inside the lid otherwise the trunk and all of its appointments are original, dating to the early 1900s. The top is flat, which makes it ideal for a center table or lamp table, and the inside is spacious, lending itself to many storage possibilities.
The hinges are tight and the lid opens easily and closes securely, with solid steel hinges. It also features leatherette trim and belt guides indicators of a high-end trunk in its day. Although the lock appears to be in working condition, there is no key. The old leather handles were replaced with three-ply dark brown leather. The inside paper lining was removed to expose the wood, which was sanded, stained (Golden Oak), and sealed with two coats of clear satin polyurethane.
Any damaged tin was repaired or replaced. The exterior top and sides were stained a deep burgundy color (Zar Rosewood).
The exterior hardware was painted (Rustoleum Satin Black), or cleaned and polished, then finished with clear satin polyurethane. The hardwood slats were sanded, stained (Golden Oak), and sealed with clear satin polyurethane.
The bottom was cleaned, sanded, painted and sealed with polyurethane. We take great care in the refinishing of our trunks. The wood is hand-sanded and smoothed with steel wool between finishing coats of Danish oil, tung oil or satin varnish. All hardware is carefully cleaned and hand-painted when necessary using detailed art brushes. The bottom is cleaned, sanded, treated with a special rust inhibitor, if necessary, painted with Rustoleum Satin Black enamel, and finished with clear satin polyurethane so its safe to place on carpet or hardwood floors.
Each trunk comes with care instructions. It is absolutely stunning -couldn't be happier.
