Century horsehair/rawhide trunk/box with brass tacks and initials B. S, by William Spencer, 320 Pearl St.
I believe this to be a small carriage or document box likely dating to the early 19. Century (see below), but it could be older, and could have had multiple uses. I believe the wood to be pine, which is covered in animal hide, probably horse, but possibly deer, and is trimmed in leather and brass tacks. S are tacked to the domed lid adjacent to a small brass handle. The iron lock is intact and retains evidence of a wax seal; unfortunately, there is no key.
The base is wood, with two wooden slates running along the long axis of the box. The interior is covered in the original light blue paper, with the label of the maker, William Spencer, Number 320 Pearl St, New York City; Trunk and Plate case Maker, Three doors from Peck-Slip, New-York. This address, in Lower Manhattan, is now occupied by the Hampton Inn Manhattan Seaport Hotel, and is just around the corner from Peck Slip, which runs down to South Street and the East River, two blocks from South Street Seaport, and one block from the Brooklyn Bridge.
A great piece of New York history! The only mention I can find of William Spencer is an advertisement for his business posted in an 1813 volume on Seamanship, the details of which largely match those on the label inside of the box.Exterior condition: This item shows wear appropriate for its age. Some of the hair has fallen off over time, exposing the hide beneath. The brass tacks are patinated as are the few visible iron brads/nails. The iron clasp and key cover open and close easily. The lid is attached to the base at the back by the exterior hide itself and is in very good condition. There are no metal hinges on the back. Interior condition: William Spencers label is fully intact and the light blue paper lining is in remarkable condition. The fabric stop strap is included but detached. Please take a close look at the pictures in order to gauge this item's condition.
