Extremely Rare Early American Deerskin Covered Traveler's Domed Trunk, ID'D With Owner's Initials in Brass Tacks, Made by Curtis & Coolidge, Windsor, Vermont, c. EXTREMELY RARE, very early deerskin covered domed traveler's trunk. Has wonderful brass tack design on top, including large initials W. Initials are large, measuring about 3 high. IT APPEARS THAT THERE WERE 2 DIFFFERENT OWNERS OVER TIME......
Tiny tack holes in the upper part of the initials indicate that the initials were at one time different. QUITE A STORY AND HISTORY WITH THIS VERY EARLY PIECE. Very few of these early trunks had this degree of decoration and initials, and this was a particularly nice one when made. Possibly owned by someone special or of means. Has at least 150 antique brass tacks used for design/decoration, the owner's initials, and even in some of the construction.
Virtually ALL ARE STILL THERE. Appears only about 10 out of the 150 are missing, which could be replaced. The tacks are about 3/8" diameter, except those used for the initials, which are 1/4" diameter. Has inside compartment as shown. Has original lining and top decoration as shown. Also has other information regarding other items made, including carriages, horse hardware, and stage tack, etc.
NICE EARLY LABEL IS WONDERFUL, AND ESPECIALLY NICE AND DESIRIBLE BEING FROM VERMONT. Windsor Vermont was the colonial capital of the state. Trunk is in very good. Condition overall for its age. Totally complete with both handles and brass tacks.
Only missing the top part of the lock. The handles are hand made of iron and appear to have been made by a period blacksmith!!
Still has most of the early leather closing strips around the perimeter of it. Trunk measures about 24 1/2" long x 12 1/2" wide x 11 high. TOP IS BEAUTIFULLY DOMED AS INDICATED. A GREAT, EXTREMELY EARLY TRUNK!!!VERY OLD AND VERY RARE, ESPECIALLY WITH THE OWNERSHIP ID initials still in place!! And especially with the story behind the change ihe early change in initials. This is a great example of such a nice, RARE MUSEUM-QUALITY COLONIAL STYLE EARLY AMERICAN TRUNK, for a variety of display, decoration, and collection objectives!!
