This is an old curved. I have no idea how old it is. Structurally the trunk is in good condition. It looks like it has never been wet -- there is no rust on the metal and no rot in the wood. However, two of the hinges are broken, with the bottom parts missing, and the third is not connected to the bottom of the trunk. Also the leather handles were worn out and most of the leather missing. The handle hardware has been removed, but I have all of the iron pieces, the ends of the leathers, and the nails.
I started a restoration project on this trunk but did not finish. The tin parts that were originally black I repainted black.I stripped the wood but did not apply any new finish. The tin parts that were varnished are pretty worn and the original pattern is mostly gone. The various sheet metal corner protectors, straps, and decorative elements appear to have originally been brass plated, but the plating is mostly gone. I painted the ones on the lid with silver paint but did not get to the ones on the bottom part. Inside the lid there is a paper decoration, but most of the trunk is lined with plain paper.
